ORLANDO, Fla. – Tropical Storm Imelda formed Sunday and is expected to become a hurricane on a forecast track that could take it away from the U.S. East Coast early next week.

The tropical storm watches for Brevard and Flagler Counties have been canceled, but don’t let your guard down just yet. As of Monday, a high surf advisory and wind advisory will be in effect.

High surf advisory

The surf is going to be rough, with waves reaching 6 to 10 feet. Along with those big waves, rip currents are going to be a major threat. These powerful currents can pull even experienced swimmers out into deeper water.

Coastal hazards

This isn’t just a one-day thing; high rip current risk will stick around through Wednesday night. If you’re near Volusia, Brevard, or Indian River counties, watch out for localized beach erosion as well.

If you do need to be near the water, keep an eye on lifeguard flags and signs—they’re there to keep you safe.

Along with the dangerous surf, gusty winds are expected to blow through the area. North to northwest winds will be between 20–30 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph. These winds could knock around unsecured objects, and you might see some tree limbs come down. There’s also a chance of power outages, so keep your phone charged just in case.
