AUGUSTA, Ga ()- Some much needed resources distributed Saturday at the Hope After Helene event in Augusta.

Volunteers included staff from the Richmond County School System and members of the Greater Young Zion Baptist Church.

Bags of groceries were handed out at Glenn Hills Middle School, one of four school distribution sites.

Principal Marvin Washington said, last year the school provided hot meals for the community after the area was hit by the hurricane and when asked if they would help out again, they were more than happy to do so.

“We just came out, we came together, and everybody did what they had to do to make sure that our families had some food to eat. A lot of the volunteers that helped us last year came back out again this year. And all the all the churches that put this together, it’s just been a great collaboration,” Washington explained.

Shontae Boyd, District 4 Richmond County School Board Member was thre too.

“The Richmond County School System is participating because we know we still have students who are in a lot of need and staff in the community. And so we wanted to come out and help participate, pass out the food supplies, the groceries, the essentials and just make sure that everyone knows there is a school system that we are trying to do our part and be here in whatever way we can be,” she said.

Nola Waltower is a freshman at Faith Christian Academy in Waynesboro and Briana Darren is a junior at Silver Bluff High School. They both wanted to volunteer at the event.

“I came out to volunteer to help those in need who need food because we don’t know what they’re going through,” said Waltower.

“I came to volunteer because I love helping people and i want to make sure they’re fed and everything’s okay,” added Darren.

More than 300 families received food at each site.
