CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — A listener-supported radio station in Central Illinois is celebrating after nearly 45 years on the air.

On Sunday, WEFT-FM, Champaign-Urbana’s community radio station held its annual street party: WEFT-Fest. Organizers said that WEFT-Fest is both a listener-appreciation event and a birthday party.

“What the radio station provided back then is still what it provides now. It’s an opportunity for people who feel like they aren’t being heard to get on the radio station. We’re all volunteers, so if somebody wants to have a show they can, and express their opinions. Whether it be musically, politically, community issues,” Eric Bohlen, station manager, said.

The festival had live music, local vendors, a raffle, and a birthday cake. Performers included Kittens Incorporated, Mousepad The Band, Sass and The K-Tels with the Murder Hornets.

The event took place on Market Street in Downtown Champaign from 2-6 p.m. You can learn more about WEFT and its annual festival online.
