Hostage’s family pleads for ceasefire: 'We need to end this war'

() The families of Israeli hostages are closely watching Monday’s talks between President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who are expected to discuss a proposal for a ceasefire in the war in Gaza.

Ronen and Orna Neutra, parents of Israeli-American Omer Neutra, 21, a Long Island native and Israeli soldier killed by Hamas, told they’ve spent two years fighting to bring their son’s remains home. They urged leaders to end the conflict and bring closure to the families still waiting.

“This crisis has to come to an end,” Ronen Neutra said Monday on “Morning in America.” “The whole Middle East, the whole region is waiting for the hostages to come back, the war to end, so that the people in the Middle East can start the rebuilding process. Both the Israelis and Palestinians deserve to get to a much better place.”

Orna Neutra said her son, who is a grandchild of Holocaust survivors, moved to Israel from the United States because “he recognized the calling and the need for the Jewish state to be protected.”

“He participated in protecting the border villages on Oct. 7, and I would tell the prime minister that it’s way past time to bring him back and to bring the hostages back and to finally bring this war, which has cost too much pain in the region, to an end,” she said.

“We have a fierce enemy, and it’s not going away,” she continued. “For years to come, Israel will need to continue to defend its borders, but for now, we need to end this war.”

The war in Gaza began Oct. 7, 2023, when Hamas stormed into Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages, according to Israeli tallies. Approximately 48 hostages, 20 of whom are believed to be alive, are still being held by Hamas.

“Twenty lives are at stake, and they’re hanging on in the tunnels of Gaza in the worst ever conditions … that’s why we’re calling on ending the war and bringing them all back while they’re still alive,” Ronen Neutra said. “Of course, the 28 families waiting for their deceased hostages are scared to death that their remains will disappear in Gaza under the rubble, and we have to make sure that the time and the urgency is top of mind and after two years, we all understand it’s far too long, and it has to end.”
