A 29-year-old man in Iowa has been arrested for allegedly holding a woman against her will and beating her “through the night,” after the woman’s daughter passed a note to her school bus driver the following morning that read, “Call 911.”

Glenroy Stefand Miller was taken into custody last week and charged with one count of second-degree kidnapping, one count of willful causing serious injury, and two counts of domestic abuse assault, records reviewed by Law&Crime show.

According to a news release from the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, the agency at about 7:24 a.m. on Wednesday received a call from a Sumner-Fredericksburg School District school reporting that one of its students had boarded a bus that morning and handed the driver a note that said, “Call 911.” Deputies “immediately” responded to the student’s home in rural Westgate, which is about 140 miles northeast of Des Moines.

Upon arriving at the address, first responders said they made contact with the parent of the student who provided the handwritten note.

“Upon investigation, it was learned that the mother of the child was being held against her will and unable to make a phone call, so she gave a note to her child to relay the message to call for help,” the release stated.

Authorities then placed Miller — who is a citizen of the Bahamas — under arrest, initially on charges of domestic assault and obstructing an emergency communication for allegedly “taking the victim’s phone, and keeping her from calling for help.”

However, authorities said they quickly learned that the situation inside the home was even worse than it appeared at first glance.

“Upon further investigation, it was learned that Miller had seriously assaulted the female victim throughout the night,” the release states. “At one point Miller started to take her to the hospital and then turned around and forced her home after realizing he would go to jail if he did. Miller continued to assault the victim throughout the night causing serious injuries and threatened to kill her by holding a knife to her throat and wrists.”

Authorities did not reveal details about the victim’s daughter, but Cedar Rapids CBS and Fox affiliate KGAN reported that she is a student at a local elementary school.

Miller was transported to the Fayette County Jail, where he remained as of Monday afternoon. While a judge on Thursday set his bond at $25,000 cash-only during his initial appearance, Miller is also being held on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer.

It was not immediately clear when Miller was scheduled to appear in court again.
