Mychal Threets, widely known as “Mychal the Librarian” on social media, will lead the relaunched children’s literacy program that originally aired from 1983 to 2006.

PBS announced Monday that “Reading Rainbow” will return with new episodes after nearly two decades off the air, with librarian and TikTok star Mychal Threets taking over hosting duties from LeVar Burton.

Threets, widely known as “Mychal the Librarian” on social media, will lead the relaunched children’s literacy program that originally aired from 1983 to 2006. The Bay Area librarian has amassed more than 800,000 followers on TikTok and Instagram through motivational videos about books, self-confidence and personal challenges.

“Reading Rainbow is returning with all-new episodes,” Threets said in a trailer released Monday. “That means new friends, new projects and, of course, new books.”

The revamped series will feature a slate of celebrity guests and book narrators, including Gabrielle Union, John Legend, Chrissy Teigen, Jamie Chung and Adam DeVine. “Dancing with the Stars” performers Rylee Arnold and Ezra Sosa will also appear, along with 14-year-old author Bellen Woodard and actor Ebon Moss-Bachrach.

Born in Fairfield, California, Threets returned home after graduating from San Jose State University and worked for 11 years at the Fairfield branch of the Solano County Library. He has served as PBS’ resident librarian for more than a year.

“My overall message with these videos is just to remind people of one, that the library exists,” Threets told KQED in 2023. “But more importantly, just remind people that they do belong.”

The original “Reading Rainbow” ran for 23 years and became one of PBS’ most beloved children’s programs, promoting reading and literacy through book reviews, field trips and celebrity readings. LeVar Burton hosted all 155 episodes of the original series, which won numerous Emmy Awards and a Peabody Award during its run.

The show became known for its theme song encouraging children to “take a look, it’s in a book” and featured segments where children reviewed their favorite books.

PBS has not announced a premiere date or the number of episodes planned for the reboot.
