URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) –- One in five adults in America have died due to heart disease. But, it’s not just a problem impacting people in the U.S. In recognition of that, people around the world raised awareness for World Heart Day on Monday.

OSF Cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Alvise F. Bernabei, who has been practicing for more than three decades, said exercise and diet are vital for heart health. He suggests walking, jogging, or any workout that requires the heart to put in more effort.

Dr. Bernabei added that exercises which are heart-healthy are also great for an individual’s brain health. But, he warned of the potential dangers of a particular mineral that he says 95% of the population overconsumes – salt.

“Salt intake [is] a silent killer. Salt leads to high blood pressure and can affect your kidney function. Avoiding salt is so important,” Bernabei said.

Signs of an unhealthy heart include shortness of breath, dizziness or chest compressions.

The World Heart Federation said Sept. 29 — World Heart Day — is an “opportunity to ignite global conversations and engagement, using powerful stories to raise heart health awareness.”
