A body was found Sunday in the wheel well of an American Airlines plane at North Carolina’s Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
According to a statement by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, the body was found after the plane arrived from Europe.
Police said the discovery was made while workers were performing maintenance on the plane. The identity is currently unknown and the cause of death is pending.
“We are deeply saddened by this news and will support Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s (CMPD) investigation as needed,” the Charlotte Douglas International Airport said in a statement, according to CNN.
The airline is currently working with law enforcement.
According to AP News, experts indicated that around “three-quarters of stowaways” die while hiding in an airplane’s undercarriage.
