Dad of murdered 22-year-old berates lawmakers in Charlotte

() The father of a murdered 22-year-old woman explained the reasons behind his fury at lawmakers during a congressional hearing in Charlotte, North Carolina on Monday.

Stephen Federico, the father of 22-year-old Logan Federico, who was murdered by a career criminal during a burglary in South Carolina, ripped lawmakers for crime policies that ensured Logan’s killer was free despite a lengthy criminal record.

Logan was fatally shot May 3 while visiting friends at the University of South Carolina in Greenville. Suspect Alexander Dickey, 30, allegedly broke into the home and killed Logan.

According to NewNation affiliate Queen City News, Dickey has been arrested 39 times and had 25 felony charges. Federico told the hearing that Dickey spent “a little over 600 days in 10 years” in prison before Logan’s death.

Federico said his daughter was dragged out of her bed naked by the suspect, then forced onto her knees with her hands on her head. She begged for mercy and for her father before being killed. Federico told this information was provided by forensics.

Speaking to “Elizabeth Vargas Reports,” Federico said his mission is to ensure other parents do not find themselves in his position.

The frustration he directed at lawmakers was simple: “I have a dead daughter that was 1,000% preventable, and I have to help prevent it from happening to somebody else.

“It’s not rocket science: you keep criminals locked up, you arrest them, you put them in prison. That’s where they belong. That’s where they’re supposed to be rehabilitated,” Federico added.

“That’s what prisons are for — rehabilitation. And if they can’t be rehabilitated, they stay in prison. The problem is, if you don’t put them in prison, you don’t know if prison actually works.”

Federico said while he will never fully recover from his daughter’s death, there is a way he can heal to some degree.

“This is what Logan would want me to do. Logan was a fighter. She fought for the underdog and right now, the innocent people, the innocent children out there, are the underdogs, and I need to fight for them.”
