SYCAMORE, Ill. (WLS) — A man is facing murder charges after his parents were found dead in a DeKalb County home Tuesday morning, officials said.

When they arrived, they found two people dead inside their home.

Gary A. Schmidt, 60, and Holly S. Schmidt, 59, died from apparent blunt-force trauma, the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office said.

A vehicle was also missing from the home but was later found in the Rockford area through a license plate reader.

Winnebago County sheriff’s deputies stopped the vehicle, and the driver was detained as part of the investigation.

The DeKalb County sheriff later confirmed that the driver was the victims’ son, 35-year-old Kevin A. Schmidt, who lived with his parents.

He has been charged with four counts of first-degree murder and is being held at the DeKalb County Jail pending a court hearing.

Local schools were temporarily placed on lockdown, as the sheriff’s office worked to determine who was responsible, police said.

The coroner is expected to conduct autopsies on the victims on Wednesday.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 815-895-2155 or Crime Stoppers at 815-895-3272. Tipsters can also email crimestoppers@dekalbcounty.org.
