Meghan Markle’s father, Thomas Markle Sr., found himself in a terrifying situation after a 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck the Philippines on September 30, and his half-sister Samantha Markle is now detailing the ordeal.
Samantha, who has been estranged from Meghan for years, posted on X (formerly Twitter) that her father, who has been living in the country in recent months, was “stuck on the 19th floor of a building in the Philippines after a massive earthquake,” adding, “and he can’t walk and he is trapped.”
The earthquake, the worst to hit the Philippines in more than a decade, struck the central province of Cebu and tragically claimed at least 60 lives, according to NBC News.
In her initial post, Samantha did not hold back her feelings toward Meghan. She blamed the Duchess of Sussex for her father’s predicament, writing, “Shame on my disgusting evil f***ing sister forever putting our father in this position. I hope she is cursed.”
Thankfully, the next morning Samantha offered a more reassuring update. “I wish to extend our deep gratitude to everyone expressing concern about my father,” she posted on X on October 1. “As of today he is OK, and making plans to get out of that building.”
She also noted that precautions were being taken to prevent a repeat scenario: “They seem to be safe for now, and hopefully there will be no serious aftershocks. Provisions are being made so that he won’t be trapped in a similar situation again.”
Thomas Markle Sr. had moved from his longtime home in Mexico to the Philippines earlier this year with his son Thomas Markle Jr., seeking a “fresh start” after the “awful drama of recent years.” In January, he told The Daily Mail, “I am ready for a change. I have felt stuck in a rut for some time and I am ready to meet new people and experience kindness.”
Samantha’s public updates come amid her long-standing criticism of Meghan. The 2023 defamation lawsuit she filed against the Duchess was dismissed, but Samantha has repeatedly expressed her belief that Meghan has mistreated their father. In a 2019 documentary, she said of Meghan, “She doesn’t have a heart, or she would have been doing everything she could to make him comfortable and reciprocate and be loving and gracious and make sure he’s comfortable in his old age. So, broken heart? No, his heart’s broken. She can’t turn herself into the victim here.”
