BIG STONE GAP, Va. (WJHL) — The Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) said it is investigating two separate inmate attacks on corrections officers that allegedly took place at Wallens Ridge Correctional Center and Wallens Ridge State Prison over the past week.

A statement from the VADOC said the first incident took place at the correctional center on Saturday, when an inmate reportedly attacked a corrections officer. The VADOC said the officer was treated at an off-site medical facility, released and has returned to work.

The statement said the second incident took place on Monday, when an inmate allegedly attacked a corrections officer, who then received treatment at an off-site medical facility.

“The VADOC will not tolerate any violence towards our correctional team,” said VADOC Director Chad Dotson. “Any inmate who so much as touches the uniform of one of our officers will face swift and serious sanctions – and we will pursue prosecution to the fullest extent of the law. The safety and security of our team, inmates, and facilities overall is our agency’s top priority.”

According to the VADOC, the incidents remain active investigations, and no further information will be released at this time.
