Everyday Hero: Cumberland Co. teen provides hygiene items for kids

GREENUP, Ill. (WCIA) — The saying, goes “if it’s a good idea, do it today, not tomorrow.” That’s exactly what one teenager in Greenup is doing to help others through hygiene.

18-year-old Becca Layton is Wednesday night’s Everyday Hero.

Layton said her organization — Closet for a Cause — was once just a dream. But now, she’s able to provide free hygiene items to kids in school.

“If you are on government pay it only pays for food, it doesn’t pay for feminine hygiene products, toothpaste, body wash, things like that,” Layton said.

What started as a small operation out of her basement, has now turned into something helping teenagers throughout Cumberland County.

“Knowing that I have the ability to help people and make them not feel like they’re out of the loop because they’re able to be like a normal human being and they can shower and have hygiene products and stuff like that and they won’t get made fun of and won’t get bullied just because of something they can’t help, makes me feel good for them,” Layton said.

And community members can help by dropping off donations at one of her many collection boxes at businesses throughout the county.

“If it wasn’t for the community I don’t think we would be able to be doing what we’re doing,” Layton added.

Layton encouraged anyone interested in finding a way to help out in their community to keeping working towards their goals.

“You’re going to have to take the failures and the punches as they come but never lose the drive that you have. That’s my biggest advice, if you want the change and you have the idea — chase it and follow it and just keep following through with it and never stop,” Layton said.
