Henry Cavill took his first tentative steps towards a full recovery on Wednesday after a leg injury brought work on his latest film to a temporary halt.
The actor has signed up for an Amazon MGM remake of Highlander – the cult, centuries-spanning fantasy blockbuster responsible for launching a long-running franchise following its 1986 release.
But work is understood to be on hold while Cavill, 42, recovers from a painful calf injury, sustained while the muscle-bound star was training for his starring role as Connor MacLeod – a character originally played by Christopher Lambert.
Taking to instagram on Wednesday, the actor confirmed his recovery was ongoing as he worked on his fitness with the help of a personal trainer.
Showing off his famously rugged physique, the shirtless Cavill pictured himself had at work in the gym, his injured lower leg protected by an orthopedic boot.
Further images show the actor working on his lower body strength with a series of leg exercises as his personal trainer looks on.

In director Russell Mulcahy’s original Highlander, Christopher Lambert played a 16th century Scottish warrior who discovers he is immortal unless his head is severed.
He gets initiated into the secret world of immortals by the virtuoso swordsman Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez, memorably portrayed by Sean Connery.
The film went on to spawn a hugely successful TV series of the same name.
In a strange twist of fate, Lambert, now 68, is also recovering from an injury after tripping on a set of hotel stairs.
The César Award-winning actor has been in physical therapy in order to get back in shape for his next project Tulipomania.
Lambert had been scheduled to appear at a Swedish convention called SciFiWorld in Jönköping when the ‘serious accident’ occurred, forcing him to withdraw from the event.
‘While he has the highest respect for people organizing events and fans who attend; unfortunately this time he will not be able to attend the [convention],’ , his representative Lucas Confortini told TMZ in March.

British star Cavill spoke about reprising the role of MacLeod in a forthcoming reboot at CinemaCon in April 2024.
He revealed that he was doing extra preparation for the production and referenced his Netflix show The Witcher: ‘If you thought you’d seen me do sword work before, you haven’t seen anything yet.’
Russell Crowe co-stars in the role originated by Connery and the remake is being directed by Chad Stahelski, who helmed all the John Wick movies.
It’s been a busy time for Cavill, who welcomed his first child with girlfriend Natalie Viscuso in January.
The actor has several productions in the works including In the Grey for Guy Ritchie and a third instalment of Enola Holmes 3 with Millie Bobby Brown.
He recently wrapped filming on another Amazon MGM Studios movie Voltron, a live action film based on the 1980s animated series.
