Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic socialist and leading candidate in the mayoral race, plans to dismantle New York City’s Gifted and Talented program for young children, signaling a return to policies from Bill de Blasio’s time as mayor.

Mamdani, who is the Democratic candidate for mayor, shared with The New York Times his intention to remove the program starting at the kindergarten level. This proposal is anticipated to spark discontent among parents, who are deeply divided over the matter.

The gifted classes would remain active through the school year, but would no longer be available next fall, according to the report.

If implemented, Mamdani’s proposal would initiate the gradual elimination of the gifted program in all elementary schools—a contentious decision that was set in motion by de Blasio in 2021 as he concluded his mayoral term.

“I will return to the previous policy,” Mamdani told the outlet in a statement. “Ultimately, my administration would aim to make sure that every child receives a high-quality early education that nurtures their curiosity and learning.”

Mayor Eric Adams reversed course on that plan once taking office in 2022.
