Brotherly bond leading ALAH to unbeaten start

ARTHUR, Ill. (WCIA) — Almost one year ago, ALAH quarterback Cruz Hale had surgery to repair a torn meniscus.

This brought uncertainty surrounding his role as a senior.

“I didn’t want to think that they weren’t going to use me, but definitely some doubt,” Cruz said. “Instead, I just tried to, while I was injured, still, try to be the best team captain as I could be, kind of still act as a quarterback even though I’m not out on the field.”

He’s playing a key role for an unbeaten Knights team, savoring a senior season of throwing passes to twin brother Cash.

“We don’t even know if we’re going to continue playing football yet, so take in all the playing time we get, all the passes he throws to me,” Cash said. “All that and even on defense, we’re both out on the field, just take it in.”

You won’t be shocked to hear these guys have been together for quite some time, so the bond is strong.

“It’s been great, and I actually started out as quarterback, and he was a receiver, and that kind of switched around so that connections is unreal,” Cash said.

“We’ve been throwing to each other in football games since fourth grade, but even longer in the backyard,” Cruz said. “It’s just something special.” “Senior year in front of the whole entire community, just throwing touchdowns to each other, this is just me throwing touchdowns to him, just like backyard catch.”

It’s not just Cruz helping Cash lead ALAH with 290 receiving yards and five touchdowns. It’s also junior QB Marcus Otto taking big snaps under center, a two-headed quarterback attack that’s a challenge to stop.

“Once one quarterback comes off, I’m able to ask him, ‘Hey, what do you see? What are some plays you maybe think can work?’ So putting a little bit of accountability on them, but honestly, it’s just been really great,” head coach Ryan Jefferson said.

It’s a Knights offense firing on all cylinders, scoring more than 35 points per game, entering our Friday Football Fever Spotlight Game of the Week against Arcola on Friday, October 3 in Arthur.
