EVANS, Ga. ()- A local elementary student is being called a hero for saving her mom’s life.

7-year-old Jordyn Norland just started her 2nd grade year at Riverside Elementary School.

But she could have never expected what happened the morning of September 29th.

“I was actually in Oregon, about as far away from here as I possibly could be,” said Mike Norland, her father.

Jordyn and her mom were getting ready to go to school, but after getting out of the shower, her mom started experiencing symptoms of a heart attack.

Jordyn’s father, Mike, was visiting family on the other side of the country.

“It was scary. There’s a three hour time difference, so it was about 5:00 in the morning when I got the call,” he said.

In a scene of panic, Jordyn’s mom was moments away from losing her life—that’s when little Jordyn took action.

“She was laying down and she told me to call 9-1-1,” Jordyn said.

Friday morning the school holding a special ceremony to honor Jordyn for her heroic actions.

Riverside Elementary School rewarded Jordyn with a Hero in Action Award for her bravery and courage.

Jordyn was also recognized as Junior Officer of the Month by the school district police department.

She got that award from a school resource officer, Alisha Saal, who calls her a close friend..

“I know Jordyn from last year, and she’s very sweet, very caring. So when I was told this news, it was no surprise to me that she did what she did,” said Saal.

Riverside Elementary Principal Lynn Gardner says she couldn’t be prouder.

“What an incredible act of bravery she showed. Not only to her parents, but now she’s able to bring that into her school community and explain to others how important it is to be ready in those times of need,” Gardner said.

Jordyn’s father saying the same.

“I’m super proud. I’m grateful that she did what she did and acted fast, otherwise it could be a different story right now. I really didn’t know how she would react in a situation like that. But, I’m glad she was brave. She was able to call 9-1-1, and do what she did,” he added.

As for Jordyn’s mom, the family says she’s taking time to rest at home and expected to make a full recovery.

But they credit their brave little girl as the reason she’s still alive.
