Alan Cumming Pitched That Donald Trump Join The Traitors

The Traitors has been bringing fans intrigue and betrayal for four seasons now, all spearheaded by the wonderful host Alan Cumming. The competition groups together some of your favorite reality TV icons to see which of them is the best at keeping secrets and a straight face.

Given all the deception required to do well in the game, Alan noted that President Donald Trump would be a strong pick for the cast. He got candid about the reasons why he could see Donald in the game—and whether he’d cast others like him.

Alan Weighed In On How Donald Would Fare On The Show

Last month, Alan received an Emmy for Best Reality Competition Series for his role as host on The Traitors. In his acceptance speech, Alan spoke about the current political climate, and, as part of that speech, he noted how well he thought President Donald Trump would be on the show.

When asked who he thought which famous figure could take on the show, he threw out Donald’s name, making some jokes at his expense:

I’m sure our President would be very good on the show [due to] having a lot of chaos and sort of turmoil and treachery, so maybe he’d like to come on and be paid for that, probably better than he gets as president.

Alan went on to talk more broadly about the political climate, tying it back to the show. He shared that while it was “a difficult time we live in,” he hoped that The Traitors “brings a little bit of joy into this life.”

Alan Isn’t Interested In Having Donald Trump’s Team On The Show

While Alan did make the quip about how Donald’s skills might lend themselves to the show, he did later clarify that he didn’t want The Traitors to turn into a battle of the politicians. While there actually has been a politician on the show before (fans will surely remember British politician John Bercow, a former Speaker of the House of Commons, who appeared on Season 2 as a desperate Faithful), Alan told Vanity Fair that he didn’t have an interest in having anyone “from the Trump universe” on a future season of the show.

Alan expressed that, given all the political strife and the current climate, it was definitely not the right time to be casting those kinds of people:

It’s not appetizing to me. I think that is too soon—far too soon. Also, there’s people you think, ‘You’re still too toxic…You’re a toxic influence.’ There are baddies, like Tom [Sandoval] came with his baggage, but it’s on a different level of toxicity.

Alan’s reference to Tom refers to his scandalous affair that was exposed on Vanderpump Rules, shattering his marriage and public reputation. It would appear that Alan sees this as the extent of infamy that should be on the show, nothing quite as extreme as that of the President.

In terms of changes to future seasons of the show, Alan also noted that he could be interested in a potential “all-stars” season down the road. This wouldn’t necessarily be about bringing back former winners, but rather fan favorites who were the most fun to watch, such as Peppermint or Kate Chastain.
