The festive Mother’s Day mood faded into horror in the evening hours of May 11, 1997, when Kevin Spann was found fatally shot at his home in Augusta, Georgia.
In a preview for a new Snapped episode airing Sunday, Oct. 12 at 6/5c p.m. on Oxygen, his wife, Gina, makes the gruesome discovery.
“I need an ambulance,” Gina frantically told the dispatcher in the recorded 911 call. “There’s blood everywhere.”
What happened to Kevin Spann?
First responders arrived and determined that Kevin was deceased. He had two gunshot wounds.
“The first shot was fatal, right under the eye,” said prosecutor Nancy Johnson. “The second one went into his upper torso, neck, and chest area.”
The lack of forced entry and execution-style slaying led investigators to an early conclusion about the potential motive.
“That’s a little personal,” said former WJBF news anchor Bob Young. “That is not a robbery.”
Investigators interview the victim’s wife
Gina told police that she’d been out running errands with her 11-year-old son and her 18-year-old friend, Larry Kelley.
Upon finding her husband’s bloody body, she rushed away out of fear. She went to nearby convenience store to report the crime.
The murder was a mystery to her. “He had no enemies,” said Young. “She was purely at a loss to give an explanation to investigators.”
Johnson explained how police approached the case. “You start,” she said, “by looking at why was this guy shot? What’s the purpose of it?”
Theories were quickly drawn from the up-close nature of the slaying. “This doesn’t make sense for a stranger on stranger type of a situation,” Johnson added. “Who does he know?”
The answer to that question ultimately led investigators to the killer. Find out who was behind the brutal shooting when Snapped airs Sunday, Oct. 12 at 6/5c on Oxygen.
