Season 9 of Love Is Blind has officially set its roots down in Colorado. So far, six episodes of the dating reality TV show have been released, and Netflix is giving fans a more behind-the-scenes look than ever.
Fans were excited at first when two Asian American contestants appeared to be growing close to one another. Before they could match, however, participant Anna Yuan dropped out of the experiment, and now she’s spoken out about why.
Anna Said She Was Worried About Her Family
In the pods, Anna spoke to her dates about how her family would likely not understand why she had chosen to go on the show. Her Chinese relatives could be more traditional when it came to romance, and she explained that they had a hard time conceptualizing the experiment:
With my parents being immigrants and having a language barrier, I’ve always naturally been their helper. When I told them, ‘Hey, Mom and Dad, I’m going on this show, they’re going to take my phone, they were like, ‘Are you being kidnapped?’
Eventually, Anna noted, she was left thinking, “What am I doing here?”
In the end, Anna’s concern for her parents was the thing that caused her to self-exit. She elaborated that it was a difficult and emotional decision that she didn’t take lightly. That said, she also clarified that she didn’t regret her choice to leave when she did:
I was a wreck. My eyes were almost swollen shut from crying. I was embarrassed… [But] I don’t think I regret it because I don’t think the connections were strong enough to have a successful marriage from there.
Anna Chose Not To Tell Her Dates
Those who have been keeping up with the season will know that one of Anna’s top matches, Patrick, entered the pods for their date, only to realize that Anna was missing on the other side. While at first he thought this might’ve been a production scheduling error, eventually he learned that Anna had chosen to leave the experiment and go home.
Per Netflix, the show’s producers did offer for Anna to go on a final date with her potential matches to inform them she was leaving, but apparently Anna was too overcome with emotion and chose to leave immediately. As reported by Netflix’s Tudum, at the time Anna was in her pajamas and “simply didn’t want to be on camera anymore.”
Since then, Anna has said that the one thing she does regret is leaving Patrick without closure. Another one of her dates, Blake, was also concerned when she didn’t show up for their date. Differently from Patrick, he wasn’t heartbroken, but genuinely worried about what had happened to her.
“At that point in the experiment, Anna and I hadn’t talked about a proposal or an engagement. It certainly felt like we weren’t close to that,” he said. “We certainly had a good bond and friendship. I don’t want to speak for her, but I think she made the right decision for herself at the moment, and I’m proud of her for doing that,” he added.
