George Clooney admits to past drug use but says 'it was never a big issue for me at all'

George Clooney has shared insights about his youthful drug experiences, admitting to trying narcotics during his early years as an actor in Hollywood in the 1980s.

The 64-year-old Oscar-winning actor told Esquire on Monday that he experimented with substances like cocaine at the start of his film career. However, he emphasized that such experimentation never became a major problem for him.

“In ’82, I gave it a try — did some blow and stuff,” he remarked to the publication. “I used to joke about doing a lot of drugs, but honestly, it was never a significant issue for me.”

“And look, there was an episode of Taxi where they’re all doing blow. At the time, it was like, No, this is not like heroin. It’s not addictive. But then it was like, Oh, well, it’s actually pretty f–king bad,” he went on.

“Plus, it was all cut with mannitol. The baby laxative. Everybody would do a line and then take a s–t.”

Clooney admitted that marijuana was “not my drug” as he recalled a particular experience he had with weed over a decade ago.

The “Gravity” actor revealed that he ate some weed brownies with pals while watching “The Wizard of Oz” soundtracked by Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon.”

“We were f–ked,” he candidly said. “I literal — I think all of us — there was like twenty of us in the screening room, and the movie ended, and we sat there without speaking for, like, hours. Hours!”

“Like the sun was coming up and we’re — it’s just not my drug.”

The father of two also opened up about his relationship with alcohol, telling the outlet that he often walked a fine line when it came to booze.

“I’ve had periods where, I wouldn’t say it was a problem — I never woke up and drank or anything,” he said. “But I’d have runs where I’d get pretty toasty every night.”

The “Good Night, and Good Luck” star recently ditched the booze altogether during his three-month run on Broadway — with the exception of the odd glass of wine on some Sundays.

But his booze-free period came to a screeching halt after the 2025 Tony Awards back in June.

“I got blasted,” he recalled. “Barely-walking drunk, you know?”

That night, the actor said he “came home with [wife] Amal, and I was just laughing. We’re lying in bed, and I go, Well, I caught up for all my abstinence in one night. I was sick all day the next day; it was hysterical.”

“I was like high school drunk. Like dumbass drunk,” he quipped.
