NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The final escaped inmate from the Orleans Justice Center has been recaptured in Atlanta.
On Wednesday, Oct. 8, sources reported that Derrick Groves was involved in an alleged stand off with Atlanta police.
Groves was one of 10 inmates who escaped the facility on the morning of May 16, through a hole cut in the wall behind the toilet in a first floor cell.

The nine recaptured escapees, Jermaine Donald, Antoine Massey, Robert Moody, Kendell Myles, Gary Price, Lenton Vanburen, Leo Tate, and Corey Boyd, have been transported to Angola Prison.
“Through a coordinated effort involving Crimestoppers Greater New Orleans, the United States Marshals Service, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Homeland Security Investigations, Louisiana State Police, the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office, the New Orleans Police Department, the Atlanta Police Department, and other federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, 28-year-old Derrick Groves, was apprehended on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, in Atlanta, Georgia after a brief stand-off. Groves was one of ten inmates who escaped from the Orleans Parish Prison on May 16, 2025, prompting a multi-agency manhunt. Since his escape, law enforcement agencies have worked together to locate and apprehend him,” said Louisiana State Police.
Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson said the following in a statement:
“Let me be very clear: when someone escapes our custody, we will not stop until they are found,” said Sheriff Hutson. “For nearly five months, law enforcement across multiple states worked tirelessly to bring Groves back into custody. I want to thank the Atlanta Police Department, the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, the U.S. Marshals Service, and our own OPSO Fugitive Apprehension Team for their relentless pursuit and commitment to public safety.”
Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill issued the following statement:
Convicted murderer Derrick Groves has finally been recaptured in Atlanta after a brief stand-off. He now faces charges for his role in the escape and I will ensure that he is prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Excellent work by all our law enforcement partners who have been working so hard for this outcome the past few months. I especially want to thank my investigators with the Louisiana Bureau of Investigation (LBI) for their work in this case.
Crimestoppers GNO issued the following statement:
