() Grocery chain Publix, which has nearly 900 stores in the Sunshine State, will allow customers to carry guns in their Florida stores after a judge overturned the state’s ban on the open carrying of firearms last month.

“As of Sept. 25, 2025, Florida law allows the open carry of firearms. Publix follows all federal, state and local laws,” a Publix spokesperson said.

The guidance from Florida’s attorney general states private business owners may still “compel individuals carrying firearms to leave their premises.”

“In any instance where a customer creates a threatening, erratic or dangerous shopping experience whether they are openly carrying a firearm or not we will engage local law enforcement to protect our customers and associates,” according to the Publix spokesperson.

Customers who spoke with were split on the company’s decision.

“As long as it’s held with responsibility and with the correct attention to, like, learning in detail about all these situations,” said Carlos Insignares, a supporter of the decision. “And as long as it’s in responsible hands, and we take accountability for ourselves.”

“Publix is that warm, welcoming place where you bring your kids,” said Ashley Butler, who lives in Tampa. “They get cookies at the bakery. It’s a little wild and a little strange. When you go to Publix, you don’t think about walking down Aisle 5 and seeing someone with a pistol cocked to their shoulder.”
