A driver has been filmed towing a crumpled caravan along a busy street in New Zealand in full view of stunned onlookers.

RD Kawana and his partner were driving along Blenheim Road in Riccarton, west of central Christchurch, on Thursday morning when they spotted the bizarre sight.

The crumpled caravan was loosely mounted on the rear chassis of what appears to be a Toyota Hiace as it scraped along the multi-lane roadway.

A stunned Mr Kawana managed to record the ordeal on his mobile, which he then shared to the popular Facebook page, Christchurch Dash Cams.

‘It wasn’t something we were expecting,’ Mr Kawana told news site Stuff.

‘I know everyone else around me was kind of blown away, everyone was shocked.’

Mr Kawana said he and his partner initially believed the caravan had somehow crashed before watching it continue steadily on its path.

The driver appeared to be ‘amused’, he said, as the unusual payload scraped loudly along its path.

New Zealand Police have confirmed they received multiple reports of a vehicle towing a caravan in an unsafe manner in Fendalton, immediately north of Riccarton.

The driver was issued with an infringement notice, police added.

Viewers flooded the post with comments, with several claiming to have spotted it elsewhere across the city.

One man wrote the caravan was seen ‘in pieces’ across town while another said they heard it scrape by while out walking along Queen Elizabeth II Drive.

Most, however, were left guessing about the driver’s state of mind.

‘How did they not realise?’ one woman wrote. ‘My question is how do they not see or hear’, another said.

One viewer simply described the scene as ‘absolute chaos’.

Daily Mail has contacted Mr Kawana for comment.
