Derrick Groves was arrested on October 8, 2025, after a short standoff at a residence in southwest Atlanta. A tip-off to Crimestoppers led the authorities to the scene, where a SWAT team employed gas canisters and a police dog to find him concealed in a crawl space under the house.

He waived extradition and will return to Louisiana to face upgraded charges of aggravated escape, in addition to his existing murder convictions.
