While no casting announcements have been confirmed, Variety reports Scarlett Johansson is being eyed to star as Mother Gothel.
LOS ANGELES — Disney is proceeding with a live-action version of their animated movie “Tangled,” according to reports.
While no casting announcements have been confirmed, Variety reports Scarlett Johansson is being eyed to star as Mother Gothel.
Deadline reports “The Greatest Showman” director Michael Gracey is still set to direct and is working from a script by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who most recently directed “I Know What You Did Last Summer.”
Not much else is known about the movie, but the announcement caused a stir online and prompted fans to speculate who will play the main characters.
Standouts online are Sabrina Carpenter and Taylor Zakhar Perez with people posting edits of them in the characters costumes online.
Some actors have even thrown their name in the ring at the mention of the project’s revival, like “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Captain America: Brave New World” actor Danny Ramierez.
“Yo @disney,” Ramirez tweeted Thursday. The post gained more than 17,000 likes.
The 2010 animated film is based off the Brothers Grimm story about a woman with magical hair named Rapunzel. Rapunzel, voiced by Mandy Moore, is trapped in a tower and rescued by bandit Flynn Rider, voiced by Zachary Levi, in Disney’s take on the story.
A live-action version of the story was scrapped earlier this year after the live-action remake “Snow White” was a box office blunder for Disney, according to Deadline. The movie — starring Rachel Zegler as Snow White and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen — made only $205 million worldwide against a $410 million total cost, according to Box Office Mojo.
It’s still unclear when production on “Tangled” will begin, who will be cast, or what it will be called.
