Victoria Police senior sergeant Ian Brooks said a huge number of emergency services attended the scene.

“They worked tirelessly to try and save this poor person but unfortunately they passed away,” Brooks said.

The truck driver remained at the scene and is assisting police with the investigation.

The crash occurred 250m from the boy’s school, Girton Grammar School.

Principal Dr Emma O’Rielly said the school was focusing on supporting its community.

“This is an unspeakable tragedy, as the principal of this of school and as a parent I’m absolutely devastated by what’s occurred,” she said.

“We’ve had a young life cut short, we’ve had a family altered forever.”

Investigators are working to determine what led to the collision.
