ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – A man accused in a double homicide that occurred more than six years ago in Orange County has been sentenced to life in prison, records show.

Pablo Antonio Tavarez, 32, was arrested almost six months after the May 2019 discovery of 34-year-old Kristina Upchurch and 37-year-old Nicole Evans. Both women were found decomposed in the 3900 block of West Orange Blossom Trail in Apopka, sheriff’s officials said.

According to Orange County Sheriff John Mina, Evans suffered two gunshot wounds to the head and multiple stab wounds while Upchurch had been stabbed multiple times.

Evans’ body was dumped about three weeks before Upchurch’s body was left in the same spot, Mina said, adding DNA evidence under the victims’ nails led investigators to Tavarez.

Records show he pleaded not guilty in 2022.

Tavarez was arrested to face two counts of first-degree murder with a weapon, according to court records. His life sentence — passed down Sept. 26 in Orange County court — stems from just the first of those two counts, records show. Internal emails state the second count will be addressed at a later date.
