Yet another Eagle star isn’t happy about his team’s offense.
Star offensive lineman Lane Johnson has expressed a desire for Philadelphia to make their play-calling “less predictable” following their surprise defeat to the Giants on Thursday night, particularly criticizing the team’s running strategy.
“It feels more complicated than necessary,” remarked Johnson. “Perhaps moving forward, introducing a bit more variety and targeting the perimeter could help … [We] need to keep defenses on their toes.”
Despite the quibbles, Johnson, a six-time Pro Bowler, said he’s not “finger pointing” toward Eagles offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo.
“I support Kevin completely. A large part of this is about execution,” Johnson noted. “We’ll review the tape to identify areas for improvement, but going forward, we should aim for more efficiency, less predictability, and take advantage of major plays and explosive opportunities.”
Running back Saquon Barkley, whose production is down after a historic 2024 season, said their struggles is more about the “mindset” of the offense.
“I think we also have to get back into that attitude, that mindset, not really giving a f–k what people are trying to do,” Barkley said. “That’s something that I’m looking for.”
The Eagles rushing unit as a whole has taken a big step back this season.

After having the 2nd-most yards on the ground per game (184.1) a year ago, Philadelphia has just 95.3 rushing yards per game through six weeks, which is 7th-fewest in the NFL.
Johnson’s comments come just days after Barkley, quarterback Jalen Hurts and receiver AJ Brown reportedly met to discuss the offensive issues, although the latter has denied the meeting happened.
Brown and fellow pass-catcher DeVonta Smith have appeared frustrated with the Eagles’ offense in recent weeks as they experience down seasons of their own.
With the loss on Thursday, the Eagles dropped to 4-2, losing straight after going undefeated through the first four weeks.
