Sometimes, the biggest wake-up call doesn’t come from fame or fortune, it comes from your kids. For rapper Offset, that moment arrived when his oldest son, Jordan, made one innocent comment that inspired him to get sober.

The Migos star opened up on the Baby, This Is Keke Palmer podcast about how a conversation with his 15-year-old son became the turning point in his decision to stop using codeine. Offset revealed that he’s now been sober for four years, a milestone he says began with that simple but powerful moment.

“My oldest son kept asking for like pineapple Fanta, but he don’t even really drink soda,” he told host Keke Palmer. “And then one day he came in studio like, ‘Why yours is different color than mine?’ It killed me.”

At the time, Offset was drinking lean, a mix of soda and codeine, during the height of his addiction. “I had to lie to him because I ain’t know what to say,” he admitted. “I’m like, ‘Mine is old, I’m about to throw it away,’ and I just grabbed it and walked off.”

The guilt hit hard. “When I went in my room, I damn near cried,” Offset said. “I felt bad as a father. He don’t even notice it’s drugs in here though. He don’t know, but in my head it’s like, him even just saying he want the same soda I want. It’s just like, ‘Oh no, I’m influencing him.’”

Offset, is also father Kody, 10, Kalea, 9, Kulture, 7, Wave, 4, and Blossom, 1. The rapper reflected on how his substance use began years earlier when success started to feel like pressure. “At first you’re just doing it, okay, experimenting and playing with it,” he said. “You could get high a little bit, but then it becomes an addiction.”

It wasn’t just his son who noticed. “My mama didn’t like it,” he said. “I’m successful, I got money, and when your mama calling you like, ‘You need to get off that stuff,’ it hurt for sure.”

Now, years later, Offset credits his sobriety to both his son’s honesty and the people who refused to give up on him. “I try to surround myself with people around me that’s gonna put me in my place,” he added. “Because sometimes, you got the money, you’re living life, can’t nobody tell you nothing.”
