The suspect fled on foot, and officers saw he had a gun, police said Thursday. Chopper 7 was over the scene.

Police said the suspect, 35-year-old McKale Mitchell, assaulted two CPD officers.

CPD said Mitchell disregarded officers’ instructions to drop the gun. That’s when one of the officers shot Mitchell in the leg.

Mitchell was arrested just after 1:45 p.m. Thursday. Police said he was taken to a local hospital in serious condition.

Two officers were also taken to an area hospital for observation.

Mitchell is facing two felony counts of Aggravated Assault of a Peace Officer, among other charges. He is due in court on Saturday, but whether he is still hospitalized was not immediately clear.

The Chicago Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the shooting. The officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for a minimum of 30 days.
