Florida Highway Patrol says the crash occurred at 2:49 p.m.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Jacksonville man has died after a vehicle crash sent his car into a ditch on I-295 on Sunday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

FHP says that the man, a 48-year-old from Jacksonville, was driving a sedan and traveling on I-295 near MM 61B in the middle left lane when he passed by a pickup truck in the middle right lane at 2:49 p.m.

The driver of the pickup truck told FHP that as the man was passing him, he lost control of the truck and it had come into contact with the back of the sedan, where it had crashed into a guardrail before being sent towards a ditch.

According to the crash report by FHP, the man who was driving the sedan was not wearing his seatbelt.

In the state of Florida, it is a primary offense to be found driving without wearing a seatbelt.

While it is unknown if he would have survived the crash had he been wearing his seatbelt, First Coast News encourages all drivers to wear their seatbelts at all times while behind the wheel.

More information about Florida’s seatbelt safety laws can be found at the Florida Department of Transportation’s webpage.
