A 29-year-old woman in Missouri has been arrested after she allegedly went to the home of her former lover and handed him a cooler containing a human fetus, telling him it contained his child.

Makayla Annette Haedt was taken into custody last week and charged with one count of felony first-degree harassment in connection with the incident, court records show. According to a probable cause affidavit, deputies with the Pulaski County Sheriff”s Office at about 2:45 a.m. on Sept. 18 responded to a call regarding a “deceased fetus in a cooler” at a residence in the 18000 block of Laddie Lane in Waynesville.

Speaking to authorities, the victim said he had been friends with Haedt “for years,” explaining that the two had “been romantic with one another on and off,” but said they “never dated,” describing their relationship as “more of a fling.”

The victim said Haedt came to him about two or three months earlier claiming she was pregnant. However, he said he did not believe her because she was a “habitual liar.” Then, on the afternoon of Sept. 17, Haedt allegedly messaged the victim “stating she had a miscarriage.” A short while later, she picked the victim up at his home and they went out to “run errands” before going back to his home to eat.

“Makayla [Haedt] then gave him food which she had gotten from the Good Samaritan, where she then handed him a red and white in color cooler, with green tape holding it closed, stating ‘here’s your kid,’ then driving off in her vehicle,” the affidavit states. “He advised me Makayla [Haedt] ‘didn’t show any sign of remorse or anything when she said it.’ [The victim] said he believed she was making a ‘cruel f—ed up joke’ and instead believed it was a cooler of drinks but was hesitant to see the contents.”

The victim said he was afraid to look in the cooler for nearly two hours, but eventually asked a friend to come over and the two opened the container together.

“After opening the cooler and observing the fetus, [the victim] then closed the cooler and called the Sheriffs office,” the affidavit says.

During the interview, authorities said the victim had tears in his eyes, appeared distraught, and kept making statements such as “this is the type of thing you see on the internet all the time, but don’t ever think it will happen to you” and “this is f—ed up, I’m sorry you guys had to see that.”

When describing what went through his mind after seeing the inside of the cooler, the victim said he was “shocked and couldn’t believe she would do something like that.”

Deputies said the cooler did appear to contain a human fetus and called a coroner to gather the container for evidence and testing.

The felony harassment charge stems from Haedt allegedly causing the victim severe emotional distress.

Haedt is being held on $50,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 28, records show.
