Diane Keaton’s death at 79 has shocked fans and even friends, but a real estate decision looks telling in hindsight.

Diane Keaton’s family has chosen to keep the circumstances surrounding her death under wraps for now. Although they confirmed her passing on October 11, they have been reticent as they mourn the legendary actress. Fans and the entertainment industry were stunned by the news of the Academy Award winner’s death, but there may have been signs of her illness prior. A particular real estate transaction is being scrutinized as a potential indicator that Keaton was unwell in her final months. Nevertheless, she was well-known for her keen interest in real estate, having flipped homes and sold them to Hollywood’s elite throughout her earlier career.

When did Diane Keaton die?

Diane Keaton passed away on October 11, 2025, merely three months before her 80th birthday. Although she had not made public appearances recently, she remained active in her career, participating in projects and interviews up until 2024. The specific cause of her death is currently unknown.

TMZ has learned that emergency responders were dispatched to Keaton’s Brentwood residence on Oct. 11 at around 8 am Pacific time. According to a source, the call was regarding Keaton, and she was taken from the home in an ambulance. The call was for a person down, though it is unclear what may have caused her medical emergency. People announced the actor’s death later that same morning.

Her decision to sell her ‘dream home’ might have been a telling sign

Keaton’s entertainment family appears to have been caught just as off-guard by her death as the general public, but apparently, hints were present that her health had taken a nosedive. An insider who spoke with people suggested her decision to list her lovingly restored home in March 2025 was a major clue. The home, which inspired her 2017 book titled The House that Pinterest Built, was one Keaton once suggested she’d finally settle down in.

Keaton had purchased and sold numerous houses over the years. According to Realtor, the beloved actor had an eye for design and enjoyed purchasing and repurposing abandoned or neglected properties. She took on the projects, gutting and renovating a house before filling it with the kind of effortless cool that Keaton was known for. Once renovations were complete, she unloaded the homes, selling them, often to other celebrities.

Diane Keaton’s little real estate business wasn’t really about making money, though. It was driven more by a bit of wanderlust. In 2017, she spoke to Wine Spectator about her Sullivan Canyon abode. Keaton admitted to the outlet that she always had a hard time staying put, despite liking the concept of “home.” She said that she never stayed in one home too long because she always found something wrong with it. The house that Pinterest built was different, though. Everything seemed right.

Other celebrities benefited from her discerning eye. She sold one property to Madonna. Another was purchased by Ryan Murphy. A Microsoft executive put down roots in another one of her Los Angeles homes. While she listed her Sullivan Canyon home in March 2025, it is unclear if the property had been sold by the time she died. The five-bedroom home was listed for $28.9 million.

A neighbor revealed he hadn’t seen the iconic movie star in months

While Keaton had been active even into her later years, something appears to have changed in recent months. A Brentwood local who was not named spoke with People. They revealed that the mother of two was very active in her community up until a couple of months ago. The insider told the outlet that while Keaton was regularly seen walking her dog, she had disappeared from view for the last few months.

Keaton’s final Instagram post was uploaded in April and fittingly featured her beloved dog. The post, on National Pet Day, was a collaboration post with Hudson Grace and featured Reggie enjoying some treats. The photos appear to have been taken inside the home that Keaton had suddenly decided to sell.
