SAVANNAH, Ga. — Southeastern Technical College (STC) has unveiled a new scholarship honoring a dedicated supporter of technical and adult education. The announcement came on Friday, revealing that the scholarship fund exceeds ,000.

This generous fund was created by the family of Mary Flanders, a native of Swainsboro who now resides in Savannah. Flanders has been a prominent figure in technical education, dedicating two decades to the Technical College System of Georgia State Board of Directors. During her tenure, she served under Governors Sonny Perdue, Nathan Deal, and Brian Kemp, before stepping down in October 2023.

STC President Larry Calhoun commended Flanders for her unwavering commitment to enhancing educational opportunities for adult learners. He emphasized that her leadership was instrumental in developing a variety of pathways enabling students to simultaneously pursue diplomas and college credits.

“In the past, students had to complete a GED before starting college courses,” Calhoun explained. “However, largely due to Mrs. Flanders’ efforts, adult education now offers diverse routes to success. Students can achieve a high school equivalency or diploma through the Technical College System of Georgia while also taking college courses. Options now include the General Education Development, HiSet, and specialized programs such as the STC Career Academy, Career Plus High School Diploma, Dual Achievement Program, and Cognia.”

“Back when the GED was the only option, students had to earn a GED before enrolling in college courses,” Calhoun said. “Now, thanks in no small part to Mrs. Flanders’ efforts, adult education students have multiple pathways to success, allowing them to earn a high school equivalency or high school diploma through TCSG while taking college courses simultaneously. High school equivalency can now be earned through General Education Development, HiSet, or through specialized programs such as the STC Career Academy, Career Plus High School Diploma, Dual Achievement Program, or Cognia.”

The announcement was made during the 2025 Southeastern Technical College Foundation’s Annual Appreciation BBQ.
