AUGUSTA, Ga. – The city’s Administrator recently presented the 2026 budget proposal, a task she described as far from gratifying, especially given the double impact it would have on commissioners tasked with addressing it.

“We are facing a deficit, and when you’re dealing with a shortfall, finding additional funds becomes necessary,” explained Commissioner Stacy Pulliam.

The Administrator highlighted the significant challenge ahead, pointing to a $20 million deficit. To address this, she suggested that commissioners consider a property tax increase, which would result in an average $150 rise in taxes for Augusta homeowners.

“It’s important to remember that for several years, we’ve had tax rollbacks, which is commendable. However, that also meant there were no additional revenues generated,” noted City Administrator Tameka Allen.

Commissioners who have historically resisted tax increases acknowledge that the current circumstances have shifted, prompting a reevaluation of their stance.

“With inflation throughout this country, there are places you do have to increase taxes,” said Commissioner Catherine Smith Rice.

“Do you want a tax increase?”

“I think eventually that’s going to be something that has to be,” said Commissioner Don Clark.

But the administrator also recommending a three percent across the board spending cut that could impact jobs and city services.

“We’re going to have to make some cuts. There are going to be people who are not happy with it. It’s like a business. When you don’t have the money, you make the cuts,” said Commissioner Tina Slendak.

The Administrator has submitted her recommendations for the first shot in this year’s battle of the budget.
