A 17-year-old from Dunnellon, Florida, is facing charges after allegedly faking his own kidnapping, which led to a statewide AMBER Alert, authorities reported.

According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, the incident unfolded on September 25 when the teen sent a distressing message to his family, claiming he had been shot. Responding to the call, deputies found his truck with a bullet hole and what appeared to be blood on the windshield.

“Crime Scene Technicians discovered a bullet hole in the vehicle’s windshield, suspected blood, the teenager’s badly damaged cellphone, drag marks in the dirt, and bicycle tracks leaving the scene,” stated the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.
