Andy Reid gets cryptic on status of Chiefs rookie Josh Simmons

Questions are swirling around the status of Kansas City Chiefs’ rookie left tackle, Josh Simmons.

Coach Andy Reid appeared notably reserved during a press conference on Wednesday when asked about Simmons’ current situation. “Regarding Josh Simmons, I won’t be making any comments today,” Reid stated. “Our general manager, Brett Veach, is managing the situation, and that’s where we’ll leave it.”

Simmons was absent from the Chiefs’ recent victory over the Lions, having been listed as questionable shortly before kickoff. He returned to his home state of California to address a family matter.

In Simmons’ absence, Jaylon Moore stepped up as the starting left tackle. Moore is expected to continue in that position for the upcoming game against the Raiders, unless Simmons returns or the Chiefs decide to make a roster change.

With Simmons out, Jaylon Moore started at left tackle for Kansas City and would likely stay in that role on Sunday against the Raiders unless the Chiefs make a move or Simmons returns.

Patrick Mahomes was all mum on the situation.

“I’ll keep conversations kind of between us,” Mahomes said. “But I’m always praying for him. I’m praying for all my teammates, so I’m always praying for him. I’ll just keep everything else kind of private to us.”

Simmons, an Ohio State product, was taken No. 32 overall by the Chiefs in April and slid right into Kansas City’s left tackle spot, a position that had been a weakness for them in recent years.

The Chiefs had better news about star wide receiver Rashee Rice, who will return from a six-game suspension on Sunday.

“I think he’s excited to be back in and going,” Reid said. “I think getting through practices here will be good for him to kind of get back into the swing of things. And we’ll see how everything goes from there. But, he’s been working hard. He’s in good shape.”

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that the pass-catcher is in “peak physical shape” and that “the Chiefs won’t be easing Rashee Rice back into action.

They will be allocating a heavy workload for him as soon as possible.”
