Richard Marles, serving as both Defence Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, has confirmed the unfortunate passing of a soldier following a “training incident” that occurred around 6:42 pm yesterday.
The Queensland Ambulance Service reported that they responded to a single-vehicle accident on Hervey Range Road.
Several paramedic teams, including a rescue helicopter, were dispatched to the scene.
One individual sustained life-threatening injuries and has subsequently passed away.
“This is a tragic loss, and the sacrifice made by our service personnel profoundly affects us all,” commented Marles.
“Our service men and women wear our nation’s uniform with pride and we recognise the risks they take each and every day in the defence of our nation.”
Two other soldiers, including a man in his 30s and a man in his 20s, were taken to hospital in a stable condition.
It’s understood they have since been discharged.
The Department of Defence confirmed in a statement there had been an “incident involving Australian Defence Force personnel” near Townsville last night.
“The welfare of ADF members and their families is a priority and Defence’s focus is on supporting those involved,” a spokesperson said.
“Due to the developing nature of the incident, no further information will be available at this time and we request the privacy of Defence members and families is respected.”
The spokesperson said further updates would be provided as they became available.
