John Bolton, who once served as the national security adviser under President Donald Trump, surrendered to authorities on Friday morning after being formally charged with disclosing classified information.

He was observed by a camera crew departing his residence in Maryland at approximately 8 a.m. local time, shortly before making his way to a nearby courthouse. Bolton faces charges that include eight counts of transmitting national defense information and ten counts of unlawful retention of such information. A conviction could potentially lead to a prison sentence of up to 10 years for each count.

The indictment follows an FBI raid conducted on Bolton’s home and office in August.

Prosecutors claim that Bolton illegally shared classified materials, which included documents detailing intelligence about potential future attacks and foreign threats, through personal email and messaging services.
