ORANGE COUNTY, Fla – A wave of unease has swept over the community surrounding the Little Econ Greenway Trail after the release of Jacoby Vontrell Tillman, a 23-year-old accused of a violent attack on a woman using the trail. His release on a $9,500 bond has left many residents unsettled.

The State Attorney’s Office has raised alarms, labeling Tillman as a potential threat to public safety. In response, prosecutors have taken action, filing a motion to have his bond revoked. Their argument hinges on claims that Tillman breached the conditions of his release by contacting a witness involved in the case.

Tillman is facing serious charges, including attempted sexual battery, battery by strangulation, and false imprisonment. Adding to the gravity of the situation, an attempted first-degree murder charge has now been included in his legal proceedings.

According to an arrest affidavit, a chilling statement allegedly made by Tillman to his mother has come to light: “I didn’t rape the lady, I was trying to kill the lady,” as cited by prosecutors.

Amid these developments, the community and trail users remain vigilant, hoping for justice and a return to safety on the popular local path.

News 6 spoke with people using the trail, many of whom expressed shock and concern.

“There was an attack here. Oh my!” one trail user said.

Another added, “It’s crazy. I didn’t think that anything like that would happen here with so much people around.”

News 6 found a sign with safety guidance along the trail. It says to buddy up and travel with a friend and to carry a cell phone, so you can communicate, and to plan your route and inform others of your destination and be aware of your surroundings,”  among other tips.

Deputies said it took several months to find and arrest Tillman after the summer attack. His defense attorney has argued that he is not a flight risk. Despite those arguments, Tillman currently remains free.

Whether Tillman will be taken back into custody will likely be decided in court as prosecutors pursue revocation of his bond.
