An Australian telecommunications provider has fallen victim to a cyber intrusion, affecting over 1,600 clients of Dodo and iPrimus. This breach compromised both the company’s email and mobile services.

The incident, which took place on Friday, was publicly disclosed by Vocus—the firm overseeing Dodo and iPrimus—on the following day.

A representative from Vocus informed 9news.com.au, stating, “Our preliminary investigation has identified unauthorized access to around 1,600 Dodo email accounts, resulting in unauthorized SIM swaps on 34 Dodo Mobile accounts.”

“We’ve collaborated with those affected to reverse the SIM swaps and are actively monitoring the situation,” the spokesperson added.

In response, the company temporarily halted its email services, according to the spokesperson.

A website monitoring mobile network and website outages on Saturday showed a spike of impacted Dodo customers, with 30 reports lodged by midday.

Vocus said they had restored email services for customers on Sunday morning.

“We continue to update our customers through our website and social media channels and will be offering additional support to our customers through IDCare,” Vocus said.

“We are continuing to monitor and have notified authorities of this incident.”

The two companies account for 9.2 per cent of the NBN in Australia, making it the fourth largest provider in the country.

An ACCC report in June estimated Dodo and iPrimus had around 804,000 customers in Australia as part of its NBN services.

It is the latest cybersecurity issue to hit an Aussie company; last week Qantas confirmed the data of up to 5.7 million customers had been exposed on the dark web.
In August, fellow telco iiNet admitted the data of around 280,000 customers m,ay have been stolen after a cybersecurity breach in the company’s order management system.

Dodo also becomes the latest telco to be hit by scandal, with Optus still reeling from its catastrophic triple zero outage that led to the deaths of three people.

As a result, millions of Optus customers are now considering leaving the telco, plunging it into further crisis after years of turmoil.
