An Illinois State University faculty member found himself in legal trouble following accusations of disrupting a Turning Point USA student group’s activities on campus. The incident, which took place last week, involved the alleged overturning of the group’s table and the destruction of promotional flyers.

Derek Lopez, a 27-year-old graduate student and teaching assistant at the university, was at the center of the controversy. Video footage shows Lopez engaging in a conversation with a man near a table set up by the conservative student group, which was promoting an event featuring political comedian Alex Stein. The video then captures Lopez flipping the table over.

In the video, Lopez justifies his actions with a reference to a biblical event, saying, “Well, you know, Jesus did it, so you know I gotta do it, right?” He then proceeds to overturn the table.

Lopez was later arrested following the incident, which has drawn attention due to the involvement of a faculty member with a student organization.

As he departed the scene, Lopez sarcastically bade farewell, saying, “Thanks guys, have a great day,” while waving before leaving the vicinity.

Lopez also allegedly disrupted a second informational table hosted by a student group, according to Illinois State University Police.

He was arrested on Friday and faces charges for disorderly conduct and criminal damage to property. Police said the case is pending and may be grounds for additional charges and university disciplinary action.

“We encourage all members of our community to learn more about free speech rights and responsibilities at Illinois State University, including constructive ways to respond when encountering speech they may disagree with,” the statement continued.
