Portland Demonstrations Signal Intensifying Opposition to Trump Policies

PORTLAND, Ore. — Over the weekend, an impressive crowd of 40,000 people took to the streets of downtown Portland, Oregon, for the “No Kings” rally. The demonstrators voiced their concerns over perceived authoritarian actions by President Donald Trump and his administration.

This large-scale protest coincided with President Trump’s controversial decision to send the National Guard to Portland, labeling the city as a “war zone.”

The day of protest commenced peacefully, with thousands of participants marching through the heart of downtown. However, tensions rose by late afternoon when hundreds of protesters gathered outside the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in South Portland.

As vendors grapple with challenges at the Chicago flea market due to ICE raids and subsequent boycotts, similar struggles were evident in Portland when federal agents responded at the ICE facility. They deployed tear gas and pepper balls to disperse protesters who had blocked the facility’s driveway and did not heed repeated orders to clear the area.

As clouds of tear gas blanketed the area, some protesters threw canisters back toward agents. Others were hit by flash bangs or pepper rounds before retreating.

Resident speaks on Portland protest chaos

Residents who live nearby say the use of tear gas is affecting their homes.

“I shouldn’t be hearing civilians on my street corner yelling for a medic because they’ve just got hit with a tear gas canister or pepper balls or hurt,” said Matthew Tucker, who lives two blocks from the ICE facility. “If a country that claims to be a democracy is using this much force, man, no one’s gonna believe you. You lose credibility on the stage.”

The city remains on edge as Portland officials brace for the possible arrival of National Guard troops, a move strongly opposed by residents.
