The Horsemen are making a grand return. The talented ensemble of mentalists, illusionists, and audacious Robin Hoods last dazzled audiences in 2016’s “Now You See Me 2.” Now, they’re gearing up to stage their most breathtaking and intricate magic performances in the upcoming film, “Now You See Me: Now You Don’t.” Curious about their adventures over the last two movies? Check out the video above for a comprehensive dive into the “Now You See Me” world.
The “Now You See Me” franchise has consistently resonated with audiences, although critics have been less enthusiastic. “Now You See Me 2” grossed over $334 million globally during its cinema run. Its predecessor, “Now You See Me,” also performed admirably at the box office, amassing more than $351 million worldwide on a budget of approximately $75 million.
Despite box office success, critical reception has been lukewarm. On Rotten Tomatoes, “Now You See Me” holds a modest 51% approval rating from critics, while “Now You See Me 2” garnered an even lower 34% approval. The Horsemen face a significant challenge in winning over critics with “Now You See Me: Now You Don’t,” but that’s not the only obstacle they have to overcome.
This time, the Horsemen are setting their sights on the Heart Diamond, owned by the infamous Vanderberg family. The Vanderbergs operate a global crime syndicate, financing their endeavors through decades of illicit diamond sales. This makes them an ideal target for the Horsemen. Danny Atlas (played by Jesse Eisenberg), Merritt McKinney (Woody Harrelson), Jack Wilder (Dave Franco), and Henley Reeves (Isla Fisher) are coming back together for this mission, though they initially face some internal conflicts.
Initially, Danny is focused on recruiting fresh talent for the heist, sidelining his original team. Newcomers Charlie (Justice Smith), Bosco (Dominic Sessa), and June (Ariana Greenblatt) are quickly thrown into the fray, soon to be joined by the rest of the Horsemen as they aim to dismantle the Vanderbergs. However, with Veronica (Rosamund Pike), the formidable matriarch of the Vanderberg family, standing in their way, the task won’t be simple. Thankfully, they have the support of Morgan Freeman’s Thaddeus Bradley to guide them through the challenges ahead.
The Horsemen are set to tangle with some major bad guys
This time around, the Horsemen’s target is a Heart Diamond held by the Vanderberg family. The Vanderbergs run a crime syndicate that spans the whole world, and they have decades of selling diamonds on the black market to fund their activities under their belts. That makes them a plum target for the team. Danny Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg), Merritt McKinney (Woody Harrelson), Jack Wilder (Dave Franco), and Henley Reeves (Isla Fisher) reunite for the film — though initially there’s an estrangement between the team’s members.
Danny is recruiting new magicians for the diamond heist, declaring that the other Horsemen are no longer part of his plans. Charlie (Justice Smith), Bosco (Dominic Sessa), and June (Ariana Greenblatt) are promptly thrown into the deep end, and the rest of the Horsemen soon join them in their quest to take the Vanderbergs down. Since they have to tangle with Veronica (Rosamund Pike), the doyenne of the Vanderbergs, don’t expect things to be easy. It’s a good thing they have Morgan Freeman’s Thaddeus Bradley to help them out.
