(The Hill) — President Donald Trump’s job approval ticked up in recent polling, even as the Republican Party continues to shoulder blame for the ongoing government shutdown, which entered its 21st day on Tuesday.

The latest Reuters/Ipsos poll, which closed on Monday, shows 42 percent of Americans approve of Trump’s performance in office, up two points from a survey conducted early this month.

The president’s approval rating last hit 42 percent in early September.

The six-day survey comes as the lapse in government funding nears its fourth week, and the majority of the public continues to blame GOP lawmakers for the ongoing standoff.

Democrats have largely stood their ground on demands for health care concessions, while Republicans have insisted that a “clean” continuing resolution is better. The Senate failed Monday for the 11th time to reach the 60-vote threshold on a stopgap funding bill that would reopen the government.

In the poll, 50 percent of all adults blame congressional Republicans, 43 percent blame the Democrats and 7 percent skipped the question.

Among Republicans, 84 percent blame congressional Democrats, while 14 percent blame their own party. On the other side, 89 percent of Democrats blame the GOP, while 9 percent blame their own party.

Among individuals who identify with neither party, 51 percent blame the GOP, 34 percent blame the Democrats and 15 percent skipped the question.

The Reuters/Ipsos survey included 4,385 adults and has a margin of error of 2 percentage points.
