NEW YORK (AP) — On Tuesday, New York City police released photos of a woman they wish to question regarding a newborn girl discovered abandoned at a bustling midtown Manhattan subway station, her umbilical cord still attached.

The infant was left unattended on Monday morning in a corridor at the 34th Street-Penn Station subway stop, a location typically teeming with commuters. This particular subway station is part of the larger Penn Station complex, known as the busiest rail hub in the United States, situated beneath the iconic Madison Square Garden arena.

Authorities are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the woman captured in a brief security camera video. The footage shows her on a city sidewalk, clutching what appears to be a bundle in the manner one might hold a baby. Police have classified this incident as endangering the welfare of a child.

According to the police, the baby was discovered alone, wrapped in a blanket. She was immediately transported to a hospital for evaluation and is currently in stable condition.

Law enforcement officials reported that an unidentified individual left the infant at the station before fleeing the scene. In response, a section of the passageway and a nearby staircase were sealed off with yellow tape for investigation.

“I’m calling it the ’Miracle on 34th Street,’” Demetrius Crichlow, president of New York City Transit, told reporters, alluding to the classic Christmas movie.

New York has a law that allows a parent to relinquish a newborn up to 30 days old at a hospital, or staffed police or fire station without fear of being prosecuted.
