Catan is set to make its debut on Netflix.

The iconic board game, previously known as Settlers of Catan, is the newest addition to Netflix’s roster of adaptations. The streaming giant has secured a “wide-range deal” granting them exclusive global rights to transform the beloved game into multiple projects.

Asmodee, the company behind Catan, made the announcement with enthusiasm through a press release.

“These upcoming adaptations will be the first to bring the imaginary island of CATAN to life. It’s a place where settlers must navigate diverse landscapes, form shifting alliances, and manage scarce resources, all while dealing with the threat of robbers,” the release details.

While specifics about the projects remain under wraps, Jinny Howe, Netflix’s head of scripted series for the US and Canada, expressed excitement about the “endless opportunities” this collaboration presents.

“Anyone who has played CATAN knows that the intense strategy at the core of the game has endless opportunities for some serious drama,” Howe said. “We’re thrilled to partner across series, features, animation, and games to bring this world to life for hardcore Settlers and new fans alike.”

The press release explicitly notes the board game will be adapted into “ambitious” live-action and animated projects, both scripted and unscripted.

Catan was released in 1995 as The Settlers of Catan by the late creator Klaus Teuber. The game challenges players to

Teuber’s sons, Guido Teuber and Benjamin Teuber, will produce all projects under the deal, along with asmodee’s Darren Kyman and Pete Fenlon of CATAN Studio.

This news comes after Netflix recently adapted asmodee’s French card game The Werewolves of Millers Hollow into a French film titled Family Pack (or Loups-garous).

Catan is now the latest game to be adapted into a Netflix series, after projects such as Arcane and Castlevania.

The streamer is also developing a Assassin’s Creed series and a Monopoly reality competition.
