National Drug Take Back Day events this weekend

SAVANNAH, Ga. — Once again, National Drug Take Back Day is on the horizon, providing a crucial opportunity for individuals to safely dispose of their unused or expired medications. This essential event, which occurs nationwide, aims to promote public health and safety by preventing medication misuse and environmental contamination.

Set to take place on October 25, Drug Take Back Day will see the participation of several agencies dedicated to ensuring that these medications are handled with care and disposed of properly. This initiative not only helps to prevent potential abuse but also contributes to a cleaner environment.

As part of the nationwide effort, numerous local events are scheduled for this weekend to make it convenient for residents to participate. Below is a guide to some of the participating counties:

  • Time: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Location: Bluffton Kroger at 27 Discovery Dr.
  • Law enforcement will be on site to accept unwanted or expired pills, including liquids, gels, or patches, outside of the store.
  • Event in partnership with the Cardinal Health Foundation.

Beaufort County: Residents can take advantage of local collection sites to dispose of their medications safely.

  • Time: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
  • Location: West Chatham YMCA, located at 165 Isaac G. Laroche Dr. in Pooler
  • You can anonymously dispose of medication at the drive-thru site.
  • This is an initiative by Memorial Health Hospital in partnership with the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office, YMCA of Coastal Ga., and HCA Healthcare.

Chatham County: Various locations will be available for the community to drop off unwanted or expired drugs without any charge.

  • Time: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Location: Toombs County Sheriff’s Office, at 357 NW Broad St., Suite #1 in Lyons, Ga.
  • No needles or liquids will be accepted at this drop-off.
