Mother Confesses to Tragic 'Death Wish' Killing of Her Son

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (WOOD) In a tragic case, a mother has admitted guilt to charges of second-degree murder and torture after allegedly claiming she was aiding her son in his wish to die before reaching adulthood. The incident involves the fatal stabbing of her son.

Katie Austin Lee, aged 40, confessed to these charges on Wednesday during a session in the Ottawa County Circuit Court.

The heartbreaking event unfolded on February 21 at a Holland apartment complex, just one day before her son, Austin Dean Pikaart, was to celebrate his 18th birthday.

During a prior court hearing, a detective recounted that Lee said her son requested her assistance in ending his life because he did not want to turn 18.

When police arrived at Bay Pointe Apartments, Lee had blood on her clothes and was holding a large kitchen knife “up by her shoulder as if to threaten” officers, records show.

During Wednesday’s court appearance, Lee also pleaded guilty to a charge of resisting and obstructing police.

Lee told dispatchers that she had used a knife to cut him after he passed out and that there were cuts to his throat and to his arm, court records show.

As part of the plea, there is a sentence agreement that has Lee facing a minimum of 60 years and a maximum term of 90 years in prison, court records show.

Lee remains held in the Ottawa County Jail. Sentencing has been set for mid-January.
